British PE Teacher, 30, on Trial Over Alleged Sexual Relationship With Teenage Student

WINCHESTER, England — A former physical education teacher in Southampton has been convicted of sexually abusing a 16-year-old student, and separately admitted to abusing two more students — a girl who was 13 and 14 at the time — in a case prosecutors described as a sustained pattern of grooming three children in her care.

The verdict

Bronwen James, 30, who taught PE at Bitterne Park School in Southampton, was found guilty on three counts of sexual activity with the 16-year-old boy following a trial at Winchester Crown Court. A jury acquitted her on a fourth related count after roughly 12 hours of deliberation.

Prosecutors said the relationship with the boy began after he asked to add James on Snapchat during a lesson in which students were allowed to use their phones. She initially declined, then accepted; the messages reportedly became flirtatious, and the two met in person at Weston Shore, where they kissed in her car. Prosecutor Edward Culver told the court the relationship escalated further at James’s home while the two watched Wimbledon tennis coverage, and that the pair had unprotected sex. The student has said he initially saw the relationship as positive but has since come to view it as grooming.

Two additional victims

Separately from the charges that went to trial, James admitted to a string of related charges involving two girls, aged 13 and 14 at the time of the offenses, also students at Bitterne Park School. According to the Crown Prosecution Service, James began with sexual communications with the younger girl at age 13 before the conduct progressed to a full sexual relationship once the girl turned 14.

A CPS spokesperson said James “used that trust to groom and sexually abuse three students,” adding: “James manipulated her victims with calculated precision, exploiting her position of authority to isolate them and normalise the abuse. This was not a lapse in judgment; it was a sustained pattern of predatory behaviour against children in her care.” None of the three students are identified here.

What happens next

James was remanded into custody following the verdict and is scheduled to return to Winchester Crown Court, where a sentencing date will be set. The three counts she was convicted of, along with the charges she admitted involving the two younger girls, are now treated as proven; the one count on which the jury acquitted her is not.
